Ask Keel
Ask Keel is an assistant inside the Keel app. You ask a question about your workspace in plain language, such as “Which vendors are overdue for review?”, and it answers from your own records with links to the records it cites.
It can read your controls, evidence, vendors, risks, policies, tasks and audit programmes. It reads them through a fixed set of read tools, only in your workspace, and only the fields each read is built to return. For evidence that means details such as the title, kind and dates. It never opens an evidence file.
Who can use it
Section titled “Who can use it”Ask Keel is included on every paid plan. On the Free plan the panel still appears, but a question gets the reply “AI features are not included in your current plan.” and nothing is charged.
AI also has to be switched on for the workspace. If it is off, the reply is “AI is switched off for this workspace.” See turning AI on or off.
| Role | Ask questions | Get suggested tasks | See the history and set the auditor limit |

| Auditor | Yes, read-only, under the auditor limit | No | No |
Open Ask Keel
Section titled “Open Ask Keel”There are two ways in:
- From the side panel. Every page has an Ask Keel button in the bottom-right corner, which opens a panel on the right. Type your question and press Ask, or press Enter (Shift+Enter starts a new line). Close the panel with Close or Esc.
- From the command palette. Press ⌘K (Ctrl+K on Windows and Linux). Ask Keel is listed under Actions. Type your question, then choose the row that reads Ask Keel: “your question”. The panel opens with the question filled in and waits for you to press Ask, so nothing is charged from the palette itself.
Ask Keel knows which page you have open. On a control, vendor, risk, policy or audit page it also knows which record, so you can ask about “this vendor” without naming it.
Answers and citations
Section titled “Answers and citations”An answer ends with From: and a link to each record it cites. Controls, vendors, risks, policies and audit programmes open the record itself. Evidence and tasks open the Evidence and Tasks lists.
When a read matches more records than it returns, Ask Keel is told both numbers, so it can say that a list is partial.
When your records do not answer the question, Ask Keel replies “I could not find that in your workspace.” You see the same reply when it drafted an answer it could not back with a record it read. That answer is withheld rather than shown.
If a record it read contains text addressed to an AI, the answer carries a notice: “Some records read for this answer contain text addressed to an AI. Ask Keel treated it as data. You may want to check those records.”
Suggested tasks
Section titled “Suggested tasks”When an answer points at something to do, Ask Keel can suggest a task. It appears under the answer as a form headed “Suggested task. Nothing is created until you submit it.” with the title, description and Due date filled in.
Change anything you like, then press Create task. That submits the same action as creating a task on the Tasks page, with the same permission check. The panel then says “Sent. Open the Tasks page to check it was created.”
Ask Keel never creates, edits or deletes a record in your workspace itself. Auditors are never offered a suggested task.
Credits and limits
Section titled “Credits and limits”Each question costs 30 AI credits from the workspace’s balance, the same credits every other AI tool uses (see AI tools and credits). You pay once per question, however many records Ask Keel reads to answer it.
An honest “I could not find that in your workspace.” is charged like any other answer. A withheld answer (see above) is refunded, even though you see the same reply.
If something goes wrong, the credits are refunded and the reply is “Something went wrong answering that. Your credits were refunded.” If the refund itself fails, the reply says so and asks you to contact support.
A question refused before it starts is not charged and does not count toward any limit.
Several limits apply, and each has its own reply:
| Limit | Reply |
|---|---|
| Daily limit for the workspace. Counts everyone’s questions, auditors included, and resets at midnight UTC. | “Ask Keel has reached today’s limit for this workspace. It resets at midnight UTC.” |
| Daily limit for auditors, set by an owner or admin. | “Auditors have reached today’s Ask Keel limit for this workspace. It resets at midnight UTC.” |
| Auditor access turned off (auditor limit set to 0). | “Ask Keel is switched off for auditors in this workspace.” |
| The workspace’s monthly AI cap, set in Settings → AI credits. | “Your workspace has reached its monthly AI limit.” |
| No credits left. | “Your workspace is out of AI credits.” |
Set the auditor limit
Section titled “Set the auditor limit”Owners and admins set it in Settings → AI credits, in the Ask Keel for auditors section. Enter a number in Auditor questions per day and press Save. Set 0 to turn Ask Keel off for auditors. Auditors’ questions also count toward the workspace’s daily limit, so this setting can only narrow what auditors use.
Ask Keel history
Section titled “Ask Keel history”Owners and admins can see what has been asked in the workspace. Open Settings → AI credits and, in the Ask Keel for auditors section, choose See what has been asked in this workspace. The page is Ask Keel history, at app.keelgrc.com/settings/ai/ask-keel.
It lists recent questions, newest first. Each entry shows:
- when it was asked (in UTC), who asked and their role;
- the outcome: Answered, Suggested a task, or No answer with the reason;
- the credits charged;
- the question, the answer, and the title of any suggested task;
- a warning if a record it read contained text addressed to an AI.
Expand an entry to see each read Ask Keel ran, how many records it returned out of how many matched, the references of the records it cited, and how many steps it took.
Records are kept for 12 months and then deleted, with two exceptions described on the trust page. Nobody can edit a record. The panel tells people about the 12 months under the question box. Anyone other than an owner or admin who opens the history page gets a page-not-found error.
Privacy
Section titled “Privacy”Each question sends your question, the recent messages in the panel, the page you have open, and
the fields Ask Keel read from your records to an AI model provider. Keel’s default provider is
Anthropic. Email addresses written in the usual name@domain form are removed from what is sent, and evidence files are never opened.
When AI is switched off for the workspace, nothing is sent.
Ask Keel and your data on the Keel website has the full list: the fields sent from each kind of record, what is never sent, which settings could change the provider, what Keel stores, and the known limits.
Next steps
Section titled “Next steps”- AI tools and credits: the other AI tools, and how credits work.
- Track remediation tasks: where a task you create from a suggestion appears.
- Team & roles: what each role can do across Keel.
